Goal #1: Exercise 15-30 minutes per day

I am horrible at exercising. One of the reasons is motivation: I’m not fat, though I do have some extra weight around my stomach, and I’m generally healthy, so there’s no ‘impending doom’ or ‘cosmetic’ reason to exercise (though you could consider the fact that there is breast cancer in my family as an ‘impending doom’ reason).

I have a lot of work to do and don’t get enough done as it is, so I usually don’t make time to work out. The other reason is that I’m a generally un-athletic person and just don’t enjoy exercising a whole lot. In addition, sometimes I just forget to do exercise – it just totally slips my mind for days at a time.

However, since I realize procrastination, long arguments with family, and other ADD-related problems probably contribute the most to my lack of getting-things-done, I have decided to combat those aspects of life. So, I’ve admitted to myself that I have an ADD problem (see About), admitted that I don’t exercise enough, and acknowledged that the books I’ve read and TV shows I’ve watched that emphasize the impact exercise has on both physical and mental health are probably right. I’ve also read specifically that lack of exercise can lead to worse ADD symptoms, that it’s time for me to get my butt in gear and do some exercise.

So let’s set some exercise goals. Right now, I just exercise whenever I feel like getting out of the house and taking a walk, which is generally 2-3 times a week for about 20 mins. I have tried to set exercise goals in the past that involve making sure I do X minutes of exercise Y times a week, and they don’t work.

I recently heard that people are much more likely to do something every day than a few times a week. This sounds a little counter-intuitive, but it makes sense when you think about it – a daily task that is part of your routine gets done more often and more easily than a few-days-a-week task that you have to make an effort to work in to your day.

So, my goal is to do 15-30 minutes of any kind of exercise EVERY DAY. There, I said it. I’ll post my progress as the week continues! I bet just writing it down for other people to see will help me stay on top of it!
